Bharat Forge Limited has signed a Rs 425 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence to supply Gas Turbine Generators to the Indian Navy. The contract will be executed over a period of five years. The gas turbine generators are intended for onboard power generation on Kolkata class ships.
Rated at 1.25 MW, the new Gas Turbine Generators will replace lower capacity units currently in service. Bharat Forge will supply these systems through a programme that involves modernisation of naval power infrastructure.
Awarded under the Buy (Indian) category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, the contract marks Bharat Forge's entry into the marine gas turbine business. Bharat Forge will deliver the first indigenous gas turbine-based power plant to operate aboard Indian Naval ships.
Bharat Forge will establish a dedicated Integration and Test facility for Gas Turbine Generators. Bharat Forge will also participate in design and development programmes for larger power plants and propulsion gas turbines as part of its defence manufacturing expansion.
These manufacturing capabilities will serve the needs of Indian armed forces through local production. They will also ensure complete sovereignty on maintenance and overhaul operations of gas turbines and gas turbine generators.
