Grasim Industries Limited has inaugurated Phase 1 of its Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) resin manufacturing plant at Vilayat, Gujarat, in collaboration with Lubrizol Advanced Materials India Private Limited. Phase 1 has a planned capacity of approximately 50,000 metric tonnes per annum.

Once fully developed, the 100,000 metric tonne facility will be the largest single-site CPVC resin manufacturing plant globally. The inauguration follows Grasim's disclosure on October 30, 2020, regarding the execution of agreements with Lubrizol Manufacturing India Private Ltd for CPVC resin production in India. An update on June 19, 2023, had informed about the first phase construction at the Vilayat chemical hub in Gujarat.

The collaboration with Lubrizol provides Grasim access to advanced manufacturing processes for the specialized polymer. CPVC resin is used in piping systems for hot and cold water distribution, industrial liquid handling, and fire sprinkler systems. The chemical is a chlorinated derivative of PVC with higher heat resistance and improved mechanical properties.

Grasim's new plant enables it to cater to growing domestic demand for CPVC and expands Grasim's specialty chemicals portfolio. Grasim already operates a chlor-alkali plant at Vilayat, and the new CPVC facility adds to its chemicals manufacturing presence at the Gujarat site. Grasim is one of India's largest manufacturers of chlor-alkali and specialty chemicals.

Commercial production at the inaugurated phase will commence at a later date, and Grasim has stated it will provide updates on the timeline. The Vilayat plant is located in the Bharuch district of Gujarat.
