Karur Vysya Bank Limited, under its flagship environmental sustainability initiative KVB Bhoomi, launched the Sponge Park at Mullai Nagar in Tambaram in partnership with the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation. The park is designed as an integrated blue-green infrastructure project that captures, stores, and naturally filters rainwater to reduce urban flooding and replenish groundwater resources.
Mullai Nagar was selected for the project as the locality faces recurring urban flooding, groundwater stress, and limited green public infrastructure. The Sponge Park functions as a nature-based solution addressing water management, climate resilience, biodiversity enhancement, and community well-being.
The inauguration was attended by Shri D. Sarathkumar, Honourable Minister for Human Resource Management, Government of Tamil Nadu, along with Shri S. Balachander, IAS, Commissioner of Tambaram City Municipal Corporation, and Shri B. Sankar, Executive Director of Karur Vysya Bank, among other officials from the bank and the municipal corporation.
MD and CEO Mr. Ramesh Babu said the bank is focused on creating long-term environmental impact by supporting initiatives that address pressing ecological challenges. He described the Sponge Park as a pioneering example of nature-based infrastructure improving water security, mitigating urban flooding, enhancing biodiversity, and creating healthier public spaces.
The project is expected to benefit residents across all age groups by providing a safe, accessible, and eco-friendly recreational space while strengthening the area's resilience to climate-related challenges. The park will also serve as a living demonstration of sustainable urban planning and environmental management, creating awareness of water-sensitive design and ecological conservation among visitors and students.
The initiative aligns with Karur Vysya Bank's CSR focus on environmental sustainability and contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Clean Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, Good Health and Well-being, and Life on Land.
