ABB India Limited is supplying electrification and motion-control solutions to Kolkata Metro, India's first metro railway established in 1984, for its expanding urban transit network. The 72-km metro system operates more than 300 train trips daily and serves over half a million passengers.

ABB Electrification solutions deployed across stations and tunnels include low-voltage and medium voltage gas-insulated switchgear, lightning protection systems, distribution boards, and variable frequency drives. These solutions are designed to optimize space, reduce downtime, and enable safe ventilation for operational continuity.

ABB Motion's HVAC-dedicated packaged drives control critical cooling and ventilation infrastructure, supporting passenger comfort during daily operations and smoke extraction during emergencies. The drives achieve average energy savings of 25 percent.

Kiran Dutt, President of Electrification at ABB India, said ABB's technologies are helping drive efficient operations across 80 percent of the nation's metro rail networks. Over the past 25 years, ABB has partnered with Kolkata Metro to equip its network with products and solutions across different corridors under the Make in India initiative.

ABB solutions have been deployed across key metro corridors including Sealdah–Phoolbagan, Joka–Majerhat, Barun Sengupta–Nazrul Tirtha, Airport, Shahid Khudiram station, and Blue Line corridors, as well as at Dakshineswar, Baranagar, Metro Railway Bhavan, and India's largest underground metro station Jai Hind Bimanbandar.

More than 80 percent of metro networks in India use ABB technology. The 25-year alliance between ABB and Kolkata Metro has enhanced efficiency and safety while facilitating seamless operations with reduced downtime.
