Maruti Suzuki India Limited's most advanced vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda, Haryana, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on July 2, 2026, during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum. Mr Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Mr Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, were present at the event.

The facility, spread over 800 acres with an integrated supplier park, currently has an annual production capacity of 0.5 million units, which will scale up to 1 million units. The total investment at the facility is projected at Rs 35,000 crore, and it is expected to create over 21,000 jobs. At full capacity, the Kharkhoda plant will rank among the world's largest vehicle manufacturing facilities.

Built on the 'Suzuki Smart Factory' concept and Industry 5.0 principles, the plant integrates advanced digital technologies and human-aware collaborative robots (COBOTS) to enhance safety, quality, and productivity. The facility meets 100 per cent of its electricity requirements through renewable energy, combining solar power with green power procurement. It operates with an installed solar capacity of 20 MWp, set to scale to 70 MWp by 2030, and functions as a zero liquid discharge plant with complete water recycling. An in-plant railway siding will be established at the Kharkhoda facility for vehicle transportation.

Mr Toshihiro Suzuki said the inauguration marks a major step for the India-Japan partnership and the Make-in-India initiative. He added that Suzuki's first battery electric vehicle, the e VITARA, is manufactured exclusively at Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant for exports to 100 countries. Suzuki has become the largest car importer in Japan.

Under its CSR initiatives, Maruti Suzuki is implementing community development projects in 10 villages near the Kharkhoda facility, spanning education, healthcare, and sanitation. Maruti Suzuki has also established four Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIMs), which have cumulatively trained 2,600 students. Maruti Suzuki's total manufacturing capacity across its Gurugram, Manesar, Hansalpur, and Kharkhoda plants stands at 2.65 million units annually, expected to reach 2.9 million units by financial year 2026-27 after the commissioning of the fourth production plant at Hansalpur.
