Varun Beverages Limited has entered into a business alliance with Asahi Group Holdings, Ltd. to introduce the CALPIS brand in India. The alliance involves launching a ready-to-drink, non-alcohol, non-carbonated dairy-based product under the CALPIS name in the Indian market.
CALPIS products will be available in two flavor variants: Original and Mango. The launch is scheduled for the second half of 2026 or thereafter. This marks Asahi Group's debut entry into India's non-alcohol and non-carbonated beverage segment.
CALPIS is Japan's pioneering fermented milk-based beverage, first created in 1919. The brand has a heritage spanning over a century and is currently available in more than 10 countries and regions, primarily across Asia and North America.
Under the alliance structure, Asahi Group Holdings will lead product development and provide technical support for production. Its local subsidiary will oversee marketing and brand management activities. Varun Beverages will handle manufacturing, distribution, and sales operations across India.
India, with a population exceeding 1.4 billion, represents a significant growth market for non-alcohol beverages. The market expanded approximately 2.3 times in volume over the past decade through 2025. Asahi Group aims to leverage Varun Beverages' 53 production facilities and nationwide sales network to drive distribution.
Varun Jaipuria, Executive Vice Chairman at Varun Beverages, stated the company sees significant long-term potential in this category. Atsushi Katsuki, President and Group CEO at Asahi Group Holdings, called India one of the world's most dynamic beverage markets and expressed confidence in creating new value through the partnership.
