Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind Claude, has filed confidentially for an initial public offering with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company announced in a blog post on Monday. The filing comes less than a week after Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round that pushed its valuation to $965 billion, making it one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

The company has not yet disclosed the number of shares it intends to offer or set a price range. Anthropic said the proposed offering will depend on market conditions and other factors.

The Series H round was co-led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners, attracting a wide set of institutional and strategic investors ahead of the anticipated public listing.

What a confidential filing means

A confidential IPO filing allows a company to begin the regulatory preparation process without publicly disclosing detailed financial information, risk factors, or internal business details. Anthropic will evaluate the IPO privately until it chooses to proceed, at which point it will file a public S-1 registration document containing detailed financials, legal disclosures, risk factors, and a breakdown of voting power among shareholders.

The AI IPO race

Anthropic's filing lands in an already intensely active IPO season. SpaceX has filed for its own initial public offering targeting a $2 trillion valuation and seeking to raise more than $75 billion. OpenAI, Anthropic's largest rival, raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion post-money valuation and is expected to file for its own IPO, setting the stage for a direct market contest between the two largest AI laboratories. The simultaneous listing ambitions of Anthropic and OpenAI will test institutional appetite for large-scale AI investment at trillion-dollar valuations.

Anthropic's journey

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, including Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, and was for several years considered a distant competitor to OpenAI and its ChatGPT product. The company has since grown into a top-tier enterprise AI provider, with Claude becoming one of the most widely used large language model platforms globally across consumer, developer, and enterprise applications.

India angle

For Indian technology and AI investors, Anthropic's IPO filing is a significant event. Several of Anthropic's Series H investors, including Capital Group, have active India exposure. Indian IT majors including TCS, Wipro, Infosys, and HCL Tech are building enterprise AI offerings on top of platforms including Claude, making Anthropic's public market debut a reference point for how global markets will value AI infrastructure businesses, and by extension how Indian IT companies' AI transformation narratives will be received by investors.
