Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has commenced commercial operations at its 2.0 MTPA Bhojudih Coal Washery, marking another step in its strategy to strengthen washed coking coal supply for the domestic steel industry.

According to the company’s exchange filing, the commercial operations became effective from May 26, 2026. The new Bhojudih facility is a three-product medium coking coal washery with raw coal washing capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum (20 lakh tonnes annually).

The washery has been developed under the Build, Operate and Maintain (BOM) model and incorporates advanced technologies including Heavy Media Cyclone, Spiral Concentrator and Froth Flotation systems for coal beneficiation. The company said the project will facilitate production of washed coking coal and improve supply to steel manufacturers.

The development comes at a time when coal washing and beneficiation have emerged as a key focus area for BCCL and Coal India as they seek to improve domestic coking coal quality and reduce dependence on imports. Coal India recently announced plans to invest around ₹3,300 crore to develop additional coking coal washeries and expand processing capacity over the coming years.

BCCL has also indicated that coal washing will play an increasingly important role in its growth strategy, with management earlier highlighting expectations of significantly improved realisations from the segment while pursuing expansion and modernisation initiatives.

BCCL is among India's leading producers of coking coal and operates across the Jharia and Raniganj coalfields, serving major steel and industrial customers. The company remains a critical contributor to India's domestic coking coal ecosystem.

Meanwhile, shares of the company were trading higher by 3.4% at ₹39.30 on the NSE at the time of publishing this article.
